Why Our Resolutions Fail in January. Every January, we’re told it’s time to start over. New habits. New bodies. New lives.

And yet, by the end of the month, most resolutions have already dissolved into guilt, frustration, and self-blame.

But maybe the problem isn’t us.

Maybe it’s the calendar.

By Rachael: For most of human history, the new year didn’t begin in the dead of winter. In ancient Rome, the year originally started in March—a time associated with planting, movement, and renewal. March was so central that several month names still carry its imprint. September was the seventh month, October the eighth, and so on. These are echoes of a calendar once aligned with the seasons.

It wasn’t until 1582, with the introduction of the Gregorian calendar, that January 1st became the official start of the year across much of the world. January itself is named after Janus, the Roman god of doorways and transitions—symbolic, yes, but not seasonal. This shift placed the beginning of the year in the coldest, darkest period for much of the Northern Hemisphere.

Astrologically, the new year still begins on March 21st, at the Spring Equinox, when the Sun enters Aries. This moment marks equal day and night, the return of light, and a true energetic reset. It is the point in the year that mirrors nature’s instinct to begin again.

You can’t plant seeds in frozen soil. Expecting radical transformation in January is like trying to sow crops during a hard frost. Nature is dormant. Trees are bare. The ground is cold and still. Animals rest or hibernate. Nothing in the natural world is being asked to become more right now. Instead, life is preserving energy, restoring itself, and quietly preparing.

January, then, is for choosing—not doing.

Rather than forcing action, this season invites discernment and alignment. It’s the time to ask:

What do I want to grow this year?

What drained me last year?

What needs healing before expansion can happen?

January is when you tend to the soil. You clear old debris. You enrich the ground. You nourish yourself quietly so that, when the time comes, you have the strength and clarity to act. Goals don’t need to be executed yet; they only need to be chosen with care.

Winter has always been a sacred time for rest, storytelling, dreaming, and inward reflection. It is when wisdom is gathered, not displayed. When the body asks for more sleep, warmth, and stillness. Moving more slowly during this season isn’t failure—it’s the body’s natural intelligence responding to its environment.

When winter is honored properly, spring arrives with momentum built in. Action no longer feels like punishment or discipline, but like inevitability. Growth happens not because we forced it, but because we allowed it to unfold in the right season.
