Individuals exhibiting delusions often hold onto their beliefs despite clear evidence to the contrary, leading to a significant impairment in their ability to function and interact with the world. Delusions can manifest in various forms, such as paranoid, grandiose, or somatic delusions, and may be associated with underlying mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or delusional disorder.

Understanding and addressing delusional behavior requires a comprehensive approach that combines psychological assessment, therapy, and, in some cases, medication to help individuals regain a more accurate perception of reality and improve their overall well-being.

Erotomania – Believing someone is in love with them, even when it is not reciprocated and will force themselves on another person and continually harass with unwanted visits, texts and phone calls and unwanted pursuit of another person. It is a form of mental illness and sociopathic behavior. Erotomania can happen to celebrities and famous people who are targeted by individuals that try to break into their homes and continually follow them. They might think there is a hidden message in a song that is especially for them and imagine the singer is singing to them.

Grandiose Ideas – can be unrealistic and most likely will never happen. A person can have a sense of superiority and entitlement blurring their judgement and decision making. They may believe they can achieve something that is an exaggeration in their mind, and they will never realistically achieve despite evidence to the contrary. They will exaggerate achievements that they have not done. This can be related to Paranoid Schizophrenia and Bi-polar. They have an exaggerated sense of their own intelligence and authority and try to convince other people of their ideas. They are always boasting and believe they are infallible and more deserving of others. Drugs and alcohol can fuel this behavior and make it worse. It is best to give the person space and stay neutral and use a calm tone and let them know you recognize their feelings.

Jealousy – Driven by believing a partner or spouse is always cheating. These are signs of mental illness, and the person absolutely believes and is convinced they are correct in their thinking. A therapist would treat this illness by presenting facts and not outright accuse the person of their false beliefs. Pseudo intimacy is a fantasy of what you think a person is like and believing you are dating when in fact it is all in your mind. Sometimes when people live alone or isolate themselves they can have a warped view of facts and reality and will challenge anyone who tries to present the truth and facts to them which can affect their ability to work and have normal relationships because they form their own beliefs. Paranoia and irrational thoughts and believe they see or hear things that aren’t there or begin to believe unrealistic conspiracies.

You can help a person with this disorder by not arguing with them. Stay calm and show understanding and suggest professional help. It is best not to directly tell the person they are delusional, rather show understanding and direct them to seek help in a safe environment and they are not alone with these thoughts. Medication and cognitive behavioral therapy may help and their willingness to recognize the problem and symptoms. Their illness could be from life experiences, lack of sleep, childhood experiences or even a physical illness. It might occur to people with late-stage Alzheimer’s because of memory loss and they tend to make things up. These are not intentional lies told to deceive, they are just beliefs in their mind that are untrue. Not to be confused with pathological liars who like to put themselves in a good light and be a hero or a victim. Drugs, alcohol, environment, isolation, trauma and lack of sleep can make this disorder worse and be a trigger.

Caring for someone with this disorder takes a lot of patience and understanding and to be aware of the tone of voice used when talking to them and not to be confrontational, but to stay calm and considerate of their opinions. Don’t baby them as this could be misinterpreted. Give them support by going to doctor’ appointments, helping with medication and general day to day chores and visit them if they are depressed. Educate yourself on the subject by talking to medical professionals who understand this illness as there are different types of delusions. Stay positive and encourage them and reassure them they are not alone.

Love and Light,

Ann

By Ann: Delusional behavior refers to a psychological phenomenon characterized by persistent, irrational beliefs or ideas that are not grounded in reality.
